Intellectually challenging/Mature anime?

My picks are:

1) The legend of the galactic heroes. (I stumbled onto it not long ago, but the complexity and thought that I've discovered there is something to behold. It's remarkable how few people know or even have heard of this anime).

2) Grave of the fireflies. (Depressing, but seemingly objective, where life and people are shown without any bias, and in the most humane way).

3) Rurouni Kenshin - Reminiscence. (In some ways a bit underdeveloped. A great story, none the less).

4) Berserk. (In some instances lacking realism, but at the same time exploring some of the most mature themes in the realm of anime. The final episode is something that few people will ever forget).

I actually steer clear from most Anime because I don't find it very stimulating. I'll have to check these out.

My top 2:

Spirited Away (it took me right back to when I read the Oz books as a kid for the first time. It's dark, comic and magical. Unparralled and genre-surpassing.)

Midori (which I recently uploaded. Tough and surreal - but satisfies every sense. Besutiful musically, image-wise, and intellectually.)

I recommend you start off with grave of the fireflies and then continue on with kenshin. The legend of galactic heroes is a lengthy series. Berserk has a few action/gore elements, so if you are turned off by those, you may want to ignore it.

Come to think of it, I also recommend Princess Mononoke (interesting piece, with philosophical message in the end)

Will check it out. I have no problem with gore (I'm an old school splatter fan.) I like Princess Monoke and other Miazaki enough - but none even match "Spirited Away."

someone here already watched ergo proxy??? i'm currently watching it right now and i think it's good... i'm not much sure if you can call it an intellectual anime or a mature anime..
who defines the moments, conditions, and the limits?can we find divine intervention?if we can handle it,we can dismantle it!are we serving our country, the system, or ourselves?

hmmm..
As for myself .. I like Miyazaki's Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle.. they are on top of my favorites.. Oh yeah, there is also another one called The Cat Returns which is very nice
I did watch Grave of the Fireflies, and I cried alot.. now I never want to watch any similar movies, it was soo heart breaking =(

One great anime movie is The Girl who Leapt Through Time.. a very interesting story, and the art style is soo good too.

As for anime series:
-Death Note: the manga is awsome to start with.. but the anime is also good cuz the story itself is unusual.. it is very intellectual too..
-Nana: I also read the manga first.. i just LOVE it, it is a mature type..
-Hana Yori Dango: yes, it is famouse already after the live-action drama.. but the manga and anime had more details and length..
- The Legend of Basara: AMAZING story.. I watched the anime first and I was shocked when I saw that the story does not end with the anime's last ep -13 eps only- so I started reading the manga till i couldn't find the rest volumes.. :'(

I am sure opinions vary greatly on what mature anime entails, but my personal favourite is:

"Haibane Renmei".

Totally agree about Berserk by the way, great way of showing complete despair.

Will certainly try The legend of the galactic heroes.

Nice topic.

Seems I got a lot to watch here... Although I thought I was an anime follower...

When the question comes to the series my favorite would be;
Basilisk with its great story about how the 3. Shogun had started... and
Samurai Champloo which is about revenge, remorse, love, friendship, enmity.... real great one

As for the films my pick would be "Ghost in the Shell" 1st and 2nd. Very detailed futuristic-utopic-but-also-chaotic film

or

Tekkonkreet was a nice touch of art too.

I love Miyazaki. Howls Moving Castle and Spirited Away are my favorites, although Laputa and Nausicca were pretty good, too. Whisper of the Heart was great for my daughter, moving into her teen years, and Pom Pokko has a very strong environmental message. While it is by no means intellectually challenging, My Friend Totoro is I think the most accessable family fare, and it has a pretty good message as well. I understand that it was created as a companion piece to Grave of the Fireflies, because the latter was so depressing. Our house is littered with Totoro's that we bought in Japan.

For something really involving, try Perfect Blue. It is both challenging and mature, without being so convoluted that you cant follow the story.

I didn't think I'd like this one, but 'Paprika' was pretty darned good. I just have a little problem with the constant time-shifting, and the predictability, but all in all, very mesmerizing and just plain weeeeird. Best when viewed with marijuana I think. laugh.gif One of the previews on the DVD feature an anime called 'Tokyo Godfathers' that also looks wonderful.

similar to Midori is also Belladona's Sadness. Both were very impressive

Other picks:
My Life as McDull (from Hong Kong, existentialist in some moments)
Mari Iyagi (from Korea. only mature viewers will understand it)
Book of the Dead (If you like indy stop motion movies)

As for series:
GITS SAC, Texhnolyze, Boogiepop Phantom and Haibane Renmei are for older viewers since they're far from being lighthearted

Paranoia Agent is one hell of a series, had to watch it twice to really get it!
Texhnolyze is also highly recommended. As for Berserk, the build up to the last few episodes of it are just so intense
and you know something really big is going to happen! But i'll not spoil for the people who have yet to check it out.

I would say "Monster", its in my opinion the most mature anime ever created. One hell of a (crime/mystery) story, damn good characters even the not so important ones are great. A good pacing even though i didnt like how the end turns out but oh well thats one minor flaw in a series that totally captivated me and its no coincidence that Monster is in many Toplists.

Heard that When They Cry - Higurashi is one hell of a mature anime but havent seen it until now.

Monster: One of the greatest anime of all time that spans over decades and has believable characters and a deep storyline.

Edit: I don't know how I missed Sunwoo's post on it.

Serial experiments LAIN is one of my favorites. It has this weird spiritual/philosophical bent that I would definitely characterize as intellectually stimulating.

Grave of fireflys wsn't exactly intellectually challenging, but it sure was mature. A very good, but horribly depressing anime.

Another Spirted Away fan here. I like Grave of the Firefiles and Mononoke Hime as well. I strongly recommend Millenium Actress for the cinematography and art direction. Heart wenching beauty.
